Picnic and Plum Blossom Viewing in Shinjuku Gyoen

(Easy Course, 1000 yen (includes park entrance fee, we go even if it rains) NEW!

Meeting Place and Time: Exit A1 of the Shinjuku SanChoume Station (on the Murunouchi or Fukutoshin Line) at 12:30

The program is ¥1000 and includes explanations of plants along the way in English. Everyone is requested to use English only for the first hour. After that, people may speak in their preferred language, but David will use only English during the walk for the first 2 hours. We’ll do a small quiz about nature during the picnic.

12:30 – 13:30 – Walk to Shinjuku Gyoen (and stop at a Convenience Store to buy food (for those who didn’t bring a lunch) (English Only Please)
13:30 – 14:30 –  Picnic and Animal/Plant Game (in English)
14:30 – 16:00 – Walk around Shinjuku Gyoen
16:00 – Finished

After the hike, those who want to go are invited to a friend’s party in a wonderful place on the 11th floor overlooking the Tsurumi River.  For those not going on the hike but wanting to go to the party, please meet us at the Tsurumi Station (on the Keihin Tohoku Line) ticket gate at 16:50. The party fee is 500 yen for BBQ goods, and you can buy other food/drinks on the way to the party.

1) Mt. Daichou & Hamura Tulip FESTIVAL!

(1000 yen Participation Fee) (EASY) (We go even if it rains) 

Meet at the ticket gate of Akigawa Station (on the Itsukaichi Line) at 12:43PM.

From Shinjuku, take the Chuo Line (Special express going towards Oume) at 11:44, arriving at Haijima Station at 12:19.  Change to the 12:32 JR Itsukaichi Line (going towards MusashiItsukaichi), arriving at Akigawa Station at 12:41.

Course: Akigawa Station – Mt. Daichou Hiking Course – Hamura Tulip Field – Hamura Station

2) Edogawa Garbage pick-up

We will meet at MYODEN Station (Tozai Line) outside the only ticket gate at 12:00noon., and then go to Edogawa River by car by and pick up trash along the banks for about 3 hours. Afterwards some members may go to a nearby restaurant for dinner.

Recommended: Dress warm for the weather and wear generally older clothing that you don’t mind getting a little dirty. Rubber boots or hiking shoes are recommended.

If you come late, walk to the river (about 12-15 min.) and look for us at the water line in the direction of Tokyo Bay. Also call Jame’s cell phone 090-1847-5075 if there are any problems finding us. The park next to the Tozai line just before the river bank has a restroom.

Let’s have fun enjoying our local nature while making it better at the same time.

This event will not be cancelled in the event of rain or only if very heavy rain as we can clean up under the bay-front bridges as well as move back and forth to the station by car). Please check the site or message me for details if any doubt.

Enjoy walking in the Tama area’s green area!

Meet at the Odakyu Line’s Satsukidai Station’s ticket gate at 12:40PM.

Take the OdakyuuExpress (going towards KataseEnoshima) from Shinjuku Station at 12:11. This arrives at ShinYurigaoka at 12:33. Change trains here to the 12:37 Odakyu Tama Line train (going towards Karakida). This arrives at Satsukidai Station at 12:38.

Course: Satsukidai Station – Gorikida Observatory Park – Prefectural Border Ridge Path – Katahira River – Kuriki Green Course – Tama New Town Observatory Point – Kurokawayatsu Park – Wakabadai Station

You can either eat lunch before the event or en route (probably around 13:30).

It’s an easy 4-5 hour course (about 12 KM) with a lot of greenery.

1) Kamakura Temple, Hike and Kamakura Beach Fun!

Bring your lunch (if eating), drinks, walking shoes, and rucksack.

 (Participation Fee 1000 yen (and 300 yen entrance to Engakuji)(Easy Course) (Will go even in light rain)

We will meet at the ticket gate (east) of Kitakamakura Station (on the Yokosuka Line) at 11:00AM or 12:42PM (DO NOT cross the tracks). If your coming for the temple experience, from Shinbashi Station, take the 10:07AM Yokosuka Line train (towards Zushi). This arrives at Kitakamakura at 10:57.
 

Hiking Course (about 10 Kilometers) – KitaKamakura Station – Engakuji Temple (lunch & sightseeing) - KitaKamakura Station (2:00PM to pick up latecomers) – Tenen Hiking Course – Gionyama Hiking Course – Yuigahama Beach (swimming, beach fun and party) – Kamakura Station

 (Should be a pretty easy hike)

Engakuji is one of the most famous Zen Buddhist temples in Japan and has a large, beautiful grounds. (Website (in Japanese) http://www.engakuji.or.jp ) We finish at the beach around 4:00PM for swimming, beach fun, eating and drinking. If you want to swim, please bring your swimsuit.

2) Arakawa River Clean-up/Picnic

The main event will be a clean up in the morning followed by a riverside picnic at 1:00pm. Participants can attend the clean up or just the picnic and or join the organizer in the afternoon for some final efforts. There will be 3 pick up times at NISHI KASAI Station

Part 1: Main River Clean Up 9:00a.m.-12:30p.m.
Riverside Picnic: 1:00p.m.-2:30p.m.
Part 2 Optional River Clean Up 3:00pm-6:30p.m.

MORNING SESSION (Main Event):
Gather at NISHI KASAI Station (Tozai Line) outside the only ticket gate at 9:00a.m., and then go to the Arakawa River by car and pick up trash along the banks for about 2.5 to 3 hours.

PICNIC:
Gather at NISHI KASAI Station at 12:30p.m. and go to the river by car for a 1:00p.m. picnic start. Picnic will basically include bentos with desert (fruit/sweets), soft drinks and beer/wine. Y1,000/Y1,500 for participants without alcohol / with alcohol, respectively. Afterwards we can throw frisbees and balls around.

OPTIONAL SESSION (with organizer):
Be sure to make an appointment for pick up. If no one tells me they are coming, I will not return to the station for pick up at this time. Gather at NISHI KASAI Station (Tozai Line) outside the only ticket gate at 2:45p.m.., and then go to the Arakawa River by car and pick up trash along the banks for about 2.5 to 3 hours.

INFO:
Coming by bicycle is recommended if you live nearby as we’ll have to use/share bicycles to access restroom in addition to 2 trips back to the station by car for later sessions. If you come late, it will be about a 30-min walk to our location near the Tozai Line bridge (but accessible via the Kaisaibashi Bridge).Also call my cell phone 090-1847-5075 if there are any problems finding us.

RAIN:
In the event of light or medium rain this event will NOT be cancelled as we will move to and from the river by car and we’ll use rain gear. In the event of heavy rain/strong winds (e.g., typhoon conditions) or lightning then the event will be cancelled.

Enjoy walking in the parks and green paths in the Tama area!
 
Meet at the Keio Line’s Tama Center Station’s ticket gate at 12:42.
Take the Keio Line (Express going towards Takao) from Shinjuku Station at 12:07. This arrives at Chofu at 12:23. Change at Chofu to the 12:24 Keio line express going towards Hashimoto. This arrives at Tama Center at 12:40.

Course: This course has a lot of parks, green paths, and lines of trees. Please see http://www.odakyu.jp/walk/course/67/ for course details.

Walking time: About 3 hours (10KM)

You can stop at a convenience store on the way and we will have a lunch stop in a park around 1:30.

2) Edogawa River Clean Up + Picnic

This will be a 2-part event with a riverside picnic at 1:00pm. Participants can attend the morning clean up and or just the picnic. There will be 2 pick up times at Barakinakayama Station.

(Note: in the event of rain me may go to a nearby restaurant rather than have a picnic.)

(Basically participants will tell me what to buy at the supermarket during the midday pick up). Afterwards we can throw frisbees and balls around, and there is a swimming pool and spa with rotemburo only 2-3min. away on foot for those interested in finishing their day with a swim (bring swim ware and cap, Y500 admission to pool + Y600 if entering sento/rotemburo area)

Optional afternoon session: As I will be on the river all day, latercomers could join me in the afternoon, but please make specific arrangements with me by e-mail, arrival time, location, etc.

INFO:
If you come late, it will be about a 25-min walk to our location behind the Ichikawa Clean Spa, or take one of the Clean Spa shuttle buses to our location. Also call my cell phone 090-1847-5075 if there are any problems finding us. There are restrooms in the Clean Spa (Y200 admission to the facility) at the tennis courts next to the Clean Spa (no charge)

RAIN:

We will have a lunch and do beach combing on a beautiful beach.
Please wear good shoes for about 4 hours walk and bring some lunch and drink.

BYOD Party in large 11F riverside apartment in Tsurumi where David’s friend Clyde lives.
We will have a blast there.
Clyde will have food for BBQing for us, which will cost 500 yen per person. Please bring your own drinks and other food (which we will buy on the way to Clyde’s place from the station).

You may join just the party (if you don’t go on the hike) if you’d like. In this case, meet at the Keikyuu Tsurumi ticket gate at 16:15.

(EASY)(¥1000 Participation Fee (Children free) + ¥500 Park Entrance Fee) (Will be held even in light rain)

Meeting Place/Time: Chuo Line’s Higashi Koganei Station’s South Exit at 9:00AM

Take the 8:39 Chuo Line Super Express train (going towards Takao) from Shinjuku Station and get off at Mitaka (arriving at 8;52). Change to the Chuo Express (going towards Takao) leaving at 8;53.  This arrives at Higashi Koganei at 8:57.

This is an 6 km course that runs through the suburbs and about half of the walk is along the Nogawa River.  We arrive at Jindaiji temple before noon, where we can enjoy the traditional Japanese atmosphere and have its famous soba noodles if you’d like. We then finish up at Jindai Botanical Park, where there’s a Chrysantemum Show and rose garden.  The entrance fee to the park is ¥500 for adults, ¥250 for those over 65 and ¥200 those 15 years and younger.

<<About the cancellation fee>>

same address as above) if necessary.

 

2) Arakawa River Clean Up

Details

We will meet at Yahiro Station (Asakusa Line) outside the only ticket gate at 1:00pmn, and then walk to the river (about 6-7 min.) and pick up trash along the river bank for about 3 to 3.5 hours. Afterwards we will have a river side dinner picnic or go to a nearby restaurant for dinner (participants will decide based on weather, etc.)

Recommended: Wear appropriate clothes for the weather and generally older clothing that you don’t mind getting a little dirty. Rubber boots are optional for this clean up (some muddy places but participants can also stay on dry land).

If you come late, walk to the river (between the Route 6 bridge and the train line bridge) and look for us at the water line. Also call my cell phone 090-1847-5075 if there are any problems finding us.

This event will only be cancelled in the event of heavy rain. Check this page or message me if any doubt.
