As a sign of support, we will make and send letters to the children at the NPO Tikondane (ZAMBIA), which is one of the charities which Jambo is supporting this month.

David will bring cards that you can write a message and picture on. Also, if you have some origami, bookmarks, postcards, or other interesting paper products to send with the letters, please bring them. JAMBO will put the letters and other paper things together and send them to TIKONDANE.

1) Hakone Hike

1000 yen, intermediate, cancelled in case of rain

Hiking up Myojogatake (924 meters) and along a ridge to the Hakone Yumoto area. Views of Mt. Fuji and Lake Ashinoko, Temples

Hiking Course: Goura Station (by the interesting, scenic old train) – Myojogatake – Touno Mine – Hakone Yumoto

This course is about 5.5 hours of walking.

From Shinjuku Station, take the 7:50AM Odakyu Line Express, which arrives in Odawara at 9:26AM. From there, get on the Hakone Tetsudo (old scenic train) at 9:30, arriving at Hakone Yumoto at 9:45. Change there, to another Hakone Tetsudo train going to Goura, leaving at 9:51 and arriving at Goura at 10:33AM. Please don’t miss these trains.

Walking Distance: About 14 KM

Elevation Gain: About 370 meters

Please wear appropriate shoes (tennis shoes, hiking boots), bring a lunch to eat on the mountain, and plenty of liquids.

2) May 6 (Sunday) – Arakawa River Clean up and Picnic

• What we’ll do

Part 1 River Clean Up

We will gather at Minami Sunamachi Station at 12:00noon. At about 12:10 we will walk about 10-12 minutes to the Arakawa River, and from about 12:30 we will begin picking up trash along the river bank heading in the direction of Tokyo Bay. Then, we will return to the bridge area for a picnic and a some play, e.g., frisbee, tossing some balls, etc.

Part 2 Picnic

From about 3:30 we will set up our picnic area and from about 4:00pm have an early dinner picnic next to the river while the sun is still out. All food and drinks will be provided for the picnic. Admission Y1,000 to cover the cost of food and drinks ( or Y1,500 for people drinking beer, wine or chuhai). We should finish up between 5:00pm and 5:30pm.

• What to bring

Gloves and appropriate shoes and clothing for the weather, generally older clothing that you don’t mind getting a little dirty.

• Important to know

Please have an early lunch at 11:00am. or 11:30a.m. before the meeting time, and then you should be ready for the early dinner picnic from 4:00pm while the sun is still up. Let’s have fun enjoying our local nature while making it better at the same time. Beach Clean Up, Odawara Historical Walk & Castle, & Hakone Sleepover!

We will meet at the ticket gate of Kamonomiya Station at 9:20 AM.

8:08  Depart Shinbashi Station (JR Tokaido Line (Platform 1) going towards Odawara) and get off at Kamonomiya (arriving at 9:16).

We will do a garbage clean-up on the beach.  Sakawa Beach is infamous for having a lot of garbage, so we’ll have a lot to pick up.

Please bring your lunch, drinks and work gloves.

2) Odawara Historical Walk & Castle

We will meet at the Odakyu Line West Exit at Odawara at 12:53.

11:21  Depart Shinjuku on the Odakyu Line (Express going towards KatasEnoshima) and get off at SagamiOona (arriving at 11:57). Change to the Odakyu Line (Express going towards Odawara), leaving at 12:01 and arriving at Odawara at 12:51

At Hakone Eco Village (in the middle of nature, a beautiful area about the same size as Tokyo Dome)

LIMIT OF 10 PEOPLE (to use futons) (No limit for people who bring their own tents and sleeping bags)

Reservations needed by April 30 (to David at jambodave@green.email.ne.jp). When you reserve, please let me know if you need a futon or will bring your own tent and sleeping gear. People who use futons will sleep in one very large room, with men on one side and women on the other.

THINGS TO BRING: Food and drink (for night (party & dinner) and morning (be sure to bring it since there are no stores nearby). There is a refrigerator to keep drinks/food cold and you can boil water for noodles, coffee, etc. You may be able to cook other things there if you need to. If you come later (at night) or want to walk around at night, please bring a flashlight.

★ The village has only a primitive bath, so it’s best to go to a hot springs in Hakone Yumoto if you want to have a bath (in which case, bring a change of clothes and towel.)

★Feel free to buy any of the goods which have been made in the workshop on the premises which are being sold.

★ For those wishing to go early, you can meet Mr. Arakawa at 10:00AM at Tounosawa Station. He is one of the owners of the facility where we stay and his phone number is 070-4307-5920. (Please call (in Japanese) in morning if needed (not later in the day)).

To go to ハコネエコvillage (Hakone Eco Village), when you go out of Tounosawa’s only ticket gate, there is a toilet on the right. Take the mountain road going up from next to the toilet. You’ll be able to see signs in the daylight, so it’s easy to understand. About an 8 minute walk from the station.

Miura Peninsula (Mt. Futago) Hiking

(Intermediate Course) (1000 yen Participation Fee) (Cancelled in case of rain)

A 4 hour hike in the Zushi area, with evergreen forests, and going up Mt. Futago.  We will meet at Shin-Zushi Station’s (on the Keihin Kyuuko Line) south ticket gate at 10:10AM.

From Shinagawa, take the 9:17 Keihin-kyuuko Express (going towards Kurihama) to Kanazawa Bunko, arriving there at 9:52.  Change to the 9:54 KeikyuuShinZushi Line (going towards ShinZushi, arriving at Shin-Zushi at 10:06.

Those who want to ride together, please get on the front car of the train at Kanazawa Bunko.

We will finish the hike at Taura Station (on the Yokosuka Line).

Please wear appropriate shoes (tennis shoes, hiking boots), bring a lunch to eat on the mountain, and plenty of liquids.

Distance: about 11KM

Meeting Time/Place: 1:00PM at Kiba Station (Tozai Line) Exit 3

Course:  Kiba Station – Kiba Park – Sendaibori Canal Park – Yokojikkenkawa Canal – Sarue Park – Kameido Shrine (WISTERIA FESTIVAL)  – Kameido Station

Walking Time: About 3 Hours (6KM) plus a lot of time for fun, so the hike should take about 4 hours.

2) April 28 (Saturday) – Int’l Friendship  Party from 7:00 -9:30pm in Roppongi

Place: Bar Quest (Roppongi) (No. 2 Rene Bldg. 3F, 5-3-1 Roppongi Minato-ku, Tokyo)

For JAMBO members, the cost is 2,000 yen  for men and 1500 yen for women w/reservation (or plus 500 yen if you go directly without making a reservation).  Foreigners get at 500 yen discount.  This includes  1 drink  & buffet included!

Half of your admission fee will be donated to SHU – The Environment NPO & O.G.AforAid. So you can have an enjoyable evening and help a good cause at the same time.

SOUTH TAKAO RIDGE Hike

(Intermediate Course)(Participation Fee 1000 yen) (Canceled in case of rain)

MEETING TIME AND PLACE:  10:15 a.m. in front of the ticket gate of Takao-san-guchi Station of the Keio Line.

TRANSPORTATION:  If you’re coming from Shinjuku, take the Keio Line (express going towards Keio Hachioji) departing from Keio Shinjuku Station at 9:20 a.m. and arriving at Kitano at 9:55. Change at Kitano to the Keio line train going towards Takaosanguchi, leaving at 9:58 and arriving Takao-san-guchi Station at 10:12.

WALKING TIME:  About five hours

Edogawa River Clean Up, Picnic & Spa/Swimming

• What we’ll do

Part 1 River Clean Up

We will gather at Myoden Station just outside of the ticket gate exit from 12:00noon, and from about 12:10 or 12:15 we will walk about 8-10 minutes to the Edogawa River and from about 12:30pm begin picking up trash along the banks as we walk toward the mouth of the river where empties into Tokyo Bay. From about 3:30pm we will take a rest at the mouth of the river at Tokyo Bay and begin setting up for a picnic overlooking Tokyo Bay.

Part 2 Picnic overlooking Tokyo Bay

From 4:00pm we will have a picnic in front of Tokyo Bay. There will be a Y1,000 admission for the picnic with all food and drinks provided (+Y500 for picnic guests drinking beer/wine/chuhai). We’ll have some seats and tables set up as well.

Part 3 The Ichikawa Clean Spa (optional)

After the picnic some guests may wish to visit the Ichikawa Clean Spa (only 6-7 minutes away on foot). If so bring a swimming suit, cap, towel and goggles. Facility entrance is Y200. Then entrance to the pool area is plus Y300 and entrance to the sento/rotemburo area is plus Y500. The Clean Spa also has courtesy shuttle buses to return people to area train stations.

As for returning to train stations, Ichikawa Shiohama (Keiyo Line) will be about a 25-minute walk from the picnic site while Myoden Station (Tozai Line) will be about a 20-minute walk from the picnic site. As was the case in the past, I may be able to drive some people back to the station.

• What to bring

Suitable clothing for the weather/temperature, hat, work gloves if you have them, rubber boots for wet/muddy areas or people in hiking/running shoes can walk on drier bank areas. We will supply the trash bags.

• Important to know

Please have an early lunch from 11:00 or 11:30a.m. before gathering to coincide with the early dinner picnic. We’ll spend about 2 to 2.5 hours on the clean up and then 1.5 to 2 hours on the picnic site.

1) Environmental Project Volunteering at Tama Zoo –  Cutting down bamboo grass, Repairing/making hiking course stairs

We meet at 9:30AM at the front main entrance of Tama Zoo’s Station (Tama Dobutsukoen).

Take the 8:47AM Keio Line Semi-express from Shinjuku to Takahatafudo (arriving at 9:21AM) and change to the Keio Dobutsu Koen Line train, leaving Takahatafudo at 9:25 and arriving at Tama Dobutsu Koen Station  at 9:28AM.

If you would like to participate, please inform David by April 5 (Thursday) so that we can get volunteer insurance. If you join this event, please bring the following: Long sleeved shirt and long pants (not shorts), work gloves, towel, and appropriate shoes (trekking shoes or hiking boots) are required.

Please bring whatever you want to eat for lunch, and drinks during the work project.
