ARAKAWA RIVER CLEAN UP (Volunteer Activity), RIVERSIDE WALK, and colorful Sakura Grass (hopefully in bloom?) Park FUN!

Meeting Place and Time: The ticket gate of Toda Kouen Station (Saikyou Line) at 9:30AM (People going from Ikebukuro can take the 9:13 JR Saikyou Line train (going towards Oomiya), which arrives at Toda Kouen Station at 9:29)

SCHEDULE
9:30AM – Meet at Toda Kouen Station (Saikyou Line) ticket gate
10:00AM – 12:00 – Do a Garbage Clean-up downstream from Todabashi bridge (Please bring work gloves if you have them).
12:00 – 14:00 – Walk along the Arakawa River and up to Sakura Grass Park
14:00 – 16:30PM – Fun in the Park (playing frisbee or whatever games people bring, eating, drinking)

We will meet at the Odakyu Line West Exit at Odawara at 10:47 AM.
9:11  Depart Shinjuku on the Odakyu Line (Express going towards Odawara) and get off at Odawara (arriving at 10:45). 
If you’d like to go from Shinjuku, get on the front of the 9:11 Odakyu Line train at Shinjuku Station. David will get on the first car at the next station (Yoyogi Uehara).

Course:  Odawara Station (West Exit) – History and Culture Walking Course (part of it – including a temple, shrine, parks and castle) – Sakawa Beach (Garbage clean-up and fun) – Odawara Station

The walking time for the walk will be about 4 hours.

Bring food for lunch and drinks.

We will go to Arasaki on the Miura Peninsula. This is a coastline hike with nice sea views, beaches and caves. We will meet at Misakiguchi station on the Keihin Kyuko (Keikyuu) Line at 9:30AM. From Shinagawa station, take the 8:18AM Keihin Kyuko Line train bound for Kurihama. Get off at Kurihama station at 9:11 and change to the 9:17 Keikyuu line going towards Misakiguchi. Get off at the last station (Misakiguchi). It arrives there at 9:29AM. This is an easy hike, so bring a plastic bag and we’ll pick up garbage on Nagahama Beach (at the end of the coastal walk.
 
Meet at the ticket gate of MisakiGuchi station on the Keihin Kyuko line at 9:30AM or Shinagawa station (meet in the front car of the Keihin Kyuko 8:18 train (David will already be in that car).

We will take the 9:43 bus from Misakiguchi to Arasaki (about 15-20 minutes)
 
David will also bring many garbage bags, received in cooperation with the Kanagawa “Beautify the Oceans” Foundation

After the event, anybody who is interested is welcome to join us to go to a party in Tsurumi!!!

1) Environmental Project Volunteering at Tama Zoo –  Cutting down bamboo grass, Repairing/making hiking course stairs

(Cancelled in case of 70% or more chance of rain)  9:30AM – 2:30PM

Cost: FREE

We meet at 9:30AM at the front main entrance of Tama Zoo’s Station (Tama Dobutsukoen).

Take the 8:47AM Keio Line Semi-express from Shinjuku to Takahatafudo (arriving at 9:21AM) and change to the Keio Dobutsu Koen Line train, leaving Takahatafudo at 9:25 and arriving at Tama Dobutsu Koen Station  at 9:28AM.

If you would like to participate, please inform David by April 5 (Thursday) so that we can get volunteer insurance. If you join this event, please bring the following: Long sleeved shirt and long pants (not shorts), work gloves, towel, and appropriate shoes (trekking shoes or hiking boots) are required.

Please bring whatever you want to eat for lunch, and drinks during the work project.

2) Part 1 River Clean Up
We will gather at Minami Sunamachi Station outside of EXIT 3 (after going through the Chiba side ticket gate) at 12:00noon. At about 12:10 we will walk about 10-12 minutes to the Arakawa River, and from about 12:30 we will begin picking up trash along the river bank heading in the direction of Tokyo Bay. Then, we will return to the bridge area for a picnic and a some play, e.g., frisbees, tossing some balls, etc.

Part 2 Picnic
From about 3:30 we will set up our picnic area and from about 4:00pm have an early dinner picnic next to the river while the sun is still out. All food and drinks will be provided for the picnic. Admission Y1,000 to cover the cost of food and drinks (+Y500 or Y1,500 for people drinking beer, wine or chuhai.) We should finish up between 5:00pm and 5:30pm.

If you will attend the picnic, PLEASE send a reservation directly to James by e-mail at yaesukita@gmail.com as he has to prepare the food and drinks for the number of people who will attend the event.

Bring gloves and appropriate shoes and clothing for the weather, generally older clothing that you don’t mind getting a little dirty. Rubber boots will not be needed for this river bank area as it is paved with most of trash right next to the paved area.

Details

• What we’ll do

Part 1 River Clean Up

We will gather at Myoden Station just outside of the ticket gate exit from 12:00noon, and from about 12:10 or 12:15 we will walk about 8-10 minutes to the Edogawa River and from about 12:30pm begin picking up trash along the banks as we walk toward the mouth of the river where empties into Tokyo Bay. From about 3:30pm we will take a rest at the mouth of the river at Tokyo Bay and begin setting up for a picnic overlooking Tokyo Bay.

Part 2 Picnic overlooking Tokyo Bay

From 4:00pm we will have a picnic in front of Tokyo Bay. There will be a Y1,000 admission for the picnic with all food and drinks provided (+Y500 for picnic guests drinking beer/wine/chuhai). We’ll have some seats and tables set up as well.

Part 3 The Ichikawa Clean Spa (optional)

After the picnic some guests may wish to visit the Ichikawa Clean Spa (only 6-7 minutes away on foot). If so bring a swimming suit, cap, towel and goggles. Facility entrance is Y200. Then entrance to the pool area is plus Y300 and entrance to the sento/rotemburo area is plus Y500. The Clean Spa also has courtesy shuttle buses to return people to area train stations.

As for returning to train stations, Ichikawa Shiohama (Keiyo Line) will be about a 25-minute walk from the picnic site while Myoden Station (Tozai Line) will be about a 20-minute walk from the picnic site. As was the case in the past, I may be able to drive some people back to the station.

• What to bring

Suitable clothing for the weather/temperature, hat, work gloves if you have them, rubber boots for wet/muddy areas or people in hiking/running shoes can walk on drier bank areas. We will supply the trash bags.

• Important to know

Please have an early lunch from 11:00 or 11:30a.m. before gathering to coincide with the early dinner picnic. We’ll spend about 2 to 2.5 hours on the clean up and then 1.5 to 2 hours on the picnic site.

Recommended: Hat, long pants (for weed protection), long-sleeve shirt (for sun protection), gloves, walking/hiking shoes, generally older clothing that you don’t mind getting a little dirty. Hiking shoes or old running shoes are recommended (rubber boots are optional.)

If you come late, walk to the river (about 10-12 min.) or take an Ichikawa Clean Spa shuttle bus and look for us at the water line in the direction of Tokyo Bay. Also call James’ cell phone 090-1847-5075 if there are any problems finding us. The adjacent Clean Spa has restrooms in its park area.

We will meet at a Yahiro Station on the Keisei Oshiage Line (which is an extension of the Toei Asakusaka Line) at 12:00 noon, and then walk to the Arakawa River and pick up trash along the banks from about 12:20 for three hours or so.

Dress for the weather with warm enough clothes. Rubber boots are recommended or appropriate hiking or walking shoes and generally older clothing that you don’t mind getting a little dirty.

This event will only be cancelled in the case of heavy rain. If there is any doubt please check the meetup page for such notices, which will also be sent to registered attendees by e-mail.

1) MusashiItsukaichi Hiking & River Sunset

(1000 yen Participation Fee) (Easy Course) (Cancelled in case of rain) NEW!

Meet at the ticket gate of MusashiItsukaichi Station (on the Itsukaichi Line) at 11:50AM.

From Shinjuku, take the Chuo Line (going towards Oume) at 10:37, arriving at Haijima Station at 11:24. Change to the 11:32JR MusashiItsukaichi Line train (Be sure to get on the part of the train that goes to MusashiItsukaichi), arriving at Itsukaichi Station Station at 11:49AM.

Course: MusashiItsukaichi Station – Komine Park – Cherry tree Ridge (still blooming?) – Kingo Waterfall – Kotokuji Temple – Akigawa Riverside Walk – MusashiItsukaichi Station

Walking Time: about 4 hours

2) Edogawa Garbage Pick-up and Dinner

We will meet at MYODEN Station (Tozai Line) outside the only ticket gate at 12:00noon., and then go to Edogawa River by car by and pick up trash along the banks for about 3 hours. Afterwards some members may go to a nearby restaurant for dinner.

Recommended: Dress warm for the weather and wear generally older clothing that you don’t mind getting a little dirty. Rubber boots or hiking shoes are recommended.

1) Fresh Green Yokohama Parks Walk

(¥1000 Participation Fee) (Cancelled in case of heavy rain)

Let’s enjoy a walk in fresh green parks in Yokohama.

☆Meeting Time/Place: 14:00 JR Negishi Line Negishi Station ticket gate

☆Course: Negishi Station – Negishi Forest Park – Sankeien Garden – Yamate Park – Ishikawacho Station

Walking Time: About 3 hours (10km).

☆The program is ¥1000. Admission of Sankeien is ¥700 for adults and ¥200 for children.

The donation will be given to Riasunomori – an organization in Ishinomaki which works for community development.

2) Edogawa Garbage Pick-up & Picnic

This will be a 3-part event centered around a riverside picnic at 1:00pm. Participants can attend one or both sessions and or just the picnic. There will be 3 pick up times at Barakinakayama Station

Part 1: River Clean Up 9:00a.m.-12:30p.m. (morning session)
Riverside Picnic: 1:00p.m.-2:30p.m.
Part 2 River Clean Up 3:00pm-6:30p.m. (afternoon session)

MORNING SESSION:
Gather at BARAKINAKAYAMA Station (Tozai Line) outside the only ticket gate at 9:00a.m., and then go to te Edogawa River by car and pick up trash along the banks for about 2.5 to 3 hours.

PICNIC:
Gather at BARAKINAKAYAMA Station at 12:45p.m. and go to the river by car for a 1:00p.m. picnic start. Picnic will basically include bentos with desert (fruit/sweets), soft drinks and beer/wine. Y1,000/Y1,500 for participants without alcohol / with alcohol, respectively. Afterwards we can throw frisbees and balls around, and there is a swimming pool and spa with rotemburo only 2-3min. away on foot for those interested in finishing their day with a swim (bring swim ware and cap, Y500 admission to pool + Y600 if entering sento/rotemburo area)

AFTERNOON SESSION:
Gather at BARAKINAKAYAMA Station (Tozai Line) outside the only ticket gate at 2:45p.m.., and then go to te Edogawa River by car and pick up trash along the banks for about 2.5 to 3 hours.

INFO:
If you come late, it will be about a 25-min walk to our location behind the Ichikawa Clean Spa, or take one of the Clean Spa shuttle buses to our location. There are restrooms in the Clean Spa (Y200 admission to the facility) at the tennis courts next to the Clean Spa (no charge)

RAIN:
In the event of light or medium rain this event will NOT be cancelled as we will move to and from the river by car and we can clean up under cover the bay front bridges as a Plan B as well as adjacent areas using rain ware. In the event of heavy rain/strong winds (e.g., typhoon conditions) then the event will be cancelled.

DINNER PICNIC:
If coming just for the picnic go directly to the river and look for us at the water’s edge near the Tozai Line Bridge Picnic will basically include bentos with desert (fruit/sweets), soft drinks and beer/wine. You can bring your own or I’ll buy some on the midday return to the station. Also, depending on the weather and the decision of participants, we may go to a nearby restaurant for dinner.

ALTERNATIVE MORNING SESSION:
I should arrive on the river in the morning for scouting and precleaning.If anyone would like to come in the morning, contact me to arrange a meet up time/place.

INFO:
Rubber boots will not be necessary for this course. Just wear comfortable clothing and footwear that you can move around in and don’t mind getting a little dirty. If you come late, it will be about a 15-min walk to our location at the water front near the Tozai Line bridge. Also call James’ cell phone 090-1847-5075 if there are any problems finding us. (FREE)(Easy Course) (Cancelled in case of rain)

We will meet at the west ticket gate (the smaller exit) of Kamakura Station (on the Yokosuka Line) at 12:35PM. From Yokohama Station, take the 12:10PM Yokosuka Line train (towards Zushi).  This arrives at Kamakura at 12:34.

Hiking Course  – Kamakura Station  – Kamakura Yuigahama Beach (Garbage pick-up) – Shichirigahama Beach (Garbage pick-up) – Inamura Point – East Enoshima Beach (Sunset) – Enoshima Station

We will spend about 1 hour each at Yuigahama Beach and Shichirigahama Beach for a beach clean-up. David will have plastic bags, but if you have work gloves, please bring them.

Walking Distance: About 8KM
