(Easy, Participation Fee 700 yen for the day (or 500 yen for only morning or only afternoon)・Cancelled in case of rain)

Meeting Time/Place: 10:00AM at Higashi Ojima Station (Toei Shinjuku Line) Ticket Gate or 3:00PM at Kiba Station (Tozai Line) Exit 3 (at the street level)

Course:  Higashi Ojima Station – OjimaKomatsugawa Park – Arakawa Riverside Walk – Sendaiborigawa Park Canal Walk – Kiba Park (Central Koto Festival) 1:00 – 3:00 – Kiba Station – Canal Walk – BotanCho Park – Echujima Park (on the Sumida River) Aomibashi Park – Toyosu Park (See the sunset on Tokyo Bay?)  – Toyosu Station

Walking Time: About 5 Hours (12KM) The morning walk is about 3 hours and the afternoon is about 2 hours. At the end of the afternoon walk, we can play frisbee, eat and drink in the park while watching the sunset on Tokyo Bay.

We are also looking for volunteers to help at the LVC (Language Volunteer Koto-ku) booth at the festival between 1:00 and 3:00PM. Volunteers can stay a short time (like 20 minutes) or longer (1-2 hours). They will do English card (vocabulary) games with passers by, or simply talk with them about whatever topic they’d like. It’s a great chance to meet some Japanese people who would like to speak with you in English, talk about yourself (your country, etc) and it would help out a wonderful volunteer group (LVC). 2) Edogawa River Clean Up, Picnic & Spa/Swimming

Part 1 River Clean Up: We will gather at Barakinakayama Station ( just outside of the north exit ticket gate exit from 12:00 noon, and from about 12:10 go to the Edogawa River by car (about 5 min.) and begin picking up trash along the banks as we walk toward the mouth of the river where it empties into Tokyo Bay. From about 3:30 pm we will take a rest at the mouth of the river at Tokyo Bay and begin setting up for a picnic overlooking Tokyo Bay.

Part 2 Picnic overlooking Tokyo Bay: From 4:00pm we will have an early dinner picnic in front of Tokyo Bay. There will be a Y1,000 admission for the picnic with all food and drinks provided (+Y500 for picnic guests drinking beer/wine/chuhai). We’ll have some seats and tables, sun cover set up as well.

Part 3 The Ichikawa Clean Spa (optional):After the picnic some guests may wish to visit the Ichikawa Clean Spa (only 4-5 minutes away on foot). If so bring a swimming suit, cap, towel and goggles. Facility entrance is Y200. Then entrance to the pool area is plus Y300 and entrance to the sento/rotemburo area is plus Y500. The Clean Spa also has courtesy shuttle buses to return people to area train stations.

Recommended: Hat, long-sleeve shirt (for sun protection), gloves, walking/hiking shoes, generally older clothing that you don’t mind getting a little dirty. The clean up route will is nearly all dry so rubber boots will not be necessary.Let’s have fun enjoying our local nature while making it better at the same time. Environmental Project

Environmental Project at Tama Zoo

Cutting down bamboo grass and cutting down old trees

(Cancelled in case of 70% or more chance of rain)  9:30AM – 2:30PM

Cost: FREE

We meet at 9:30AM at the front main entrance of Tama Zoo’s Station (Tama Dobutsukoen).

Take the 8:47AM Keio Line Semi-express from Shinjuku to Takahatafudo (arriving at 9:21AM) and change to the Keio Dobutsu Koen Line train, leaving Takahatafudo at 9:25 and arriving at Tama Dobutsu Koen Station  at 9:28AM.

If you would like to participate, please inform David by October 11 (Thursday) so that we can get volunteer insurance. If you join this event, please bring the following: Long sleeved shirt and long pants (not shorts), work gloves, towel, and appropriate shoes (trekking shoes or hiking boots) are required.

Please bring whatever you want to eat for lunch, and drinks during the work project.

1) Kanazawa Bunko – Kamakura Hike

(Intermediate)(Participation Fee 1000 yen) (Canceled in case of HEAVY rain)

Bring your own beverages and lunch box and backpack.

Please wear comfortable hiking shoes/boots.

Meet at the ticket Gate of Kanazawa Bunko station on the Keihin Kyuko line at 10:55AM.  This arrives at Kanazawa Bunko at 9:41.  From Yokohama, you can take the 10:35 Keihin Kyoko Express (going towards Misakiguchi), arriving at Kanazawa Bunko at 10:51.

Walking Time: about 4 hours

Course: Kanazawa Bunko Station – Kanazawa Nature Park – Mt. Daihei – Paradise Hiking Course – Kamakura Station

After the hike, those who are interested may go to see the following documentary.

Amnesty International, Kamakura Group, will show the documentary “The Diary of a Tibetan Woman”, followed by a talk with the director, Ogawa Marie. The film features Lhamo Tso, a woman whose husband is a political prisoner in China. She escapes with their four children and husband’s parents to Dharamsala, India, home in exile of the Dalai Lama and a large community of Tibetans, many of whom have made the same treacherous  journey over the Himalayas. Unable to read or write, Llamo Tso supports her family by making Tibetan bread. They eventually gain asylum in America.

The film is mostly in Tibetan with Japanese subtitles but the story can be basically understood just by watching the moving family scenes.

Venue: Kirara Hall (Shogai Gakushu Center), Kamakura. It is a 5-minute walk from the main exit of Kamakura JR station.

Date: September 29, Saturday, from 6:30 pm

Admission: 800yen in advance, 1000 yen same day.

Okutama Therapy Road Hiking 

(Participation Fee 1000 yen)(Not Difficult) (In case of rain, the event will be held on September 24 (Monday))

Meet at the JR Ohme Line’s Okutama Station’s Ticket Gate at 9:55AM.  From Shinjuku, take the JR Holiday Special Rapid Okutama#5 (going to Okutama, leaving from platform 7) at 8:19AM.  This arrives at Okutama Station at 9:54.  Be sure to arrive on this train as we will be unable to wait for the next one, since we take the 10:05 bus to Okutama Lake.

Please wear appropriate shoes (tennis shoes, hiking boots), bring a lunch to eat on the mountain, and plenty of liquids.

At the end of the hike, we can go to the Tama River for a short swim and/or go to a new Craft Beer Bar near the station.

Course (from Okutama Station): Okutama Station (by bus – 15 minutes)   – Okutama Lake – Old (Therapy) Road – Shidakura Suspension Bridge – Tama River (Swimming) and/or Craft Beer Bar –  Okutama Station

Chichibu Hike & Cosmos/Spider Lilly Fields

(1000 yen Participation fee + 300 yen Spider Lilly Fields Entrance Fee) (Intermediate Course) (Cancelled in case of rain)

Bring your lunch and plenty of liquids.

Meet at the ticket gate of Higashi Agano Station at 9:35AM or at the front car of the 9:19 train at Hanno.

From Ikebukuro Station, take the Seibu Ikebukuro Line train (express) at 8:20AM and get off at Hanno Station at 9:16. Change there to the 9:19 Seibu Chichibu Line (just across the platform) .  This arrives at Higashi Agano station at 9:34.

Walking time – about 4 hours – Higashi Agano Station – Mt Monomi – Mt. Hiwada –  – Kinchakuda (fields of Cosmos & Chrysallis) – Alishan Organic Restaurant – Koma Station

This hike finishes off at Kinchakuda (a beautiful field of Cosmos & Spider Lilly (Cluster amaryllis) and you can eat at the Organic Natural food restaurant “Alishan.”

Please don’t forget to bring a rucksack for your food/drinks and wear exercise shoes!

You can also soak in the river, so if you want to swim, please bring your swim suit.
