Take the following trains:

•Shinjuku Station (Odakyu Line Express going towards Odawara) 8:30AM – ShinMatsuda, arriving at 9:55 – Matsuda Station JR Gotemba Line (10:07 Departure) – Yaga Station (10:20)

DEFINITELY arrive at this time (since we cannot wait for the next train since they run infrequently)!

This course includes the Shasui Waterfall, one of Japan’s top 100 waterfalls.

Kamakura Historical Walking Tour

(Easy)(¥1000 Participation Fee) (Cancelled in case of heavy rain)

Ancient seafront capital Kamakura is deeply connected to dunes. We’re going to visit historical spots and temples in Zaimokuza to see how Kamakura looks like.

Motoyawata standing on the dune, Fudarakuji with plentiful cultural assets, Komyoji with a huge gate and a rock garden, Wakaejima, the oldest port facility in Japan; they are all full of history.

Ships gathered there and trade with China flourished. Various Chinese culture like zen, architecture, sculpture, carved lacquer, etc. was brought about and such a prosperous medieval heritage has been handed down over the centuries.

☆Course:  Kamakura Station East Exit – Geba – Sakasagawa Bridge – Motoyawata Shrine – Otomatsu Inari Daimyojin Shrine – Kuhonji – Fudarakuji – Komyoji – Wakaejima –  Kamakura Station 

Walking Time: About 2 hours (6km).

Izu-ga-take Hiking in Chichibu

 (¥1000 Participation Fee)   (Cancelled in case of rain) (A bit difficult)

Bring your food and drink and wear shoes appropriate for hiking.

From Ikebukuro, take the Seibu Ikebukuro (Express) Line’s 8:50AM train (going towards Hanno) and get off at the last stop (Hanno). Change there (cross the platform) to the Seibu Chichibu Line going towards Seibu Chichibu. Get off at Shomaru Station, arriving at 10:17AM. Make sure to get on this train as we cannot wait for the next one.  We’ll meet at the ticket gate there at 10:20AM.    

Course:  Shomaru Station – Shoumaru Pass – Izu Peak – Nishi Agano Station

We will have a 5 hour hike on this course with nice views and beautiful forests. There’s also a place where we scale a rock wall with a gentle incline (not dangerous  using a chain.

Environmental Project at Tama Zoo

This day’s main work is preparing for Japanese mushroom cultivation.

The main types of work are cutting down weeds and bamboo grass, cutting down old trees, making paths or sometimes keeping track of the various species in the area (the work varies depending on the day).

Cost: FREE

We meet at 9:30AM at the front main entrance of Tama Zoo’s Station (Tama Dobutsukoen).

Take the 8:43AM Keio Line Semi-express from Shinjuku to Takahatafudo (arriving at 9:21AM) and change to the Keio Dobutsu Koen Line train, leaving Takahatafudo at 9:24 and arriving at Tama Dobutsu Koen Station  at 9:28AM.

If you would like to participate, please inform David by April 25 (Thursday) so that we can get volunteer insurance. If you join this event, please bring the following: Long sleeved shirt and long pants (not shorts), work gloves, towel, and appropriate shoes (trekking shoes or hiking boots) are required.

OUME HIKING & AZALEA FESTIVAL

(Easy) (1000 yen Participation Fee + 300 yen (Azalea Festival)) (Cancelled in case of rain)

Please wear appropriate shoes (tennis shoes, hiking boots), bring a lunch to eat on the mountain, and plenty of liquids.

We meet at Miyanohira Station ticket gate at  11:50AM. Take the 11:15AM Oume Line train from Tachikawa Station.  This arrives at Ome Station at 11:45.  Go across the platform and take the 11:46 train towards Okutama.  This train arrives at MiyanoHira Station at 11:49.  Be sure to arrive by this time since we will be unable to wait for the next train.

Today’s hiking is about 3 hours. It finishes off at the Shiofune Temple, which has 20,000 red, white and purple Azaleas.  Should be gorgeous!!!

Meet at the ticket gate of Akigawa Station (on the Itsukaichi Line) at 12:43PM.

From Shinjuku, take the Chuo Line (Special express going towards Oume) at 11:44, arriving at Haijima Station at 12:19.  Change to the 12:32 JR Itsukaichi Line (going towards MusashiItsukaichi), arriving at Akigawa Station at 12:41.

Course: Akigawa Station – Mt. Daichou Hiking Course – Hamura Tulip Field – Hamura Station

2) Edogawa Garbage pick-up

We will meet at MYODEN Station (Tozai Line) outside the only ticket gate at 12:00noon., and then go to Edogawa River by car by and pick up trash along the banks for about 3 hours. Afterwards some members may go to a nearby restaurant for dinner.

Recommended: Dress warm for the weather and wear generally older clothing that you don’t mind getting a little dirty. Rubber boots or hiking shoes are recommended.

If you come late, walk to the river (about 12-15 min.) and look for us at the water line in the direction of Tokyo Bay. Also call Jame’s cell phone 090-1847-5075 if there are any problems finding us. The park next to the Tozai line just before the river bank has a restroom.

Let’s have fun enjoying our local nature while making it better at the same time.

The top of Mt. Ougi is very spacious with a wonderful view of Mt. Fuji.

  • 8:26AM Leave Shinjuku Station on the Keio Line (special express going towards TakaoSanGuchi)
  • 9:18 Arrive at Takao Station
  • 9:24 Take the Chuo Line train (towards Kofu)
  • 9:52 Arrive at Torisawa Station

Meet on the front of the 9:47 Chuo Line train at Takao if you want to go together from there.

We will meet at NISHI KASAI Station (Tozai Line) outside the only ticket gate for exits 1 and 2 at 12:00noon., and then go to the Arakawa River by car and pick up trash along the banks for about 3 to 3.5 hours. Afterwards we go to a nearby restaurant for dinner.

Recommended: Dress warm and rubber boots are recommended. Also wear generally older clothing that you don’t mind getting a little dirty.

Machida Area Cherry Blossom Walk/Festivals/Ohanami

(NEW!)

(¥1000 Participation Fee) (Cancelled in case of heavy rain)

This course includes cherry tree lined rivers, several festivals, a large nature park, and finishes with an Ohanami party. People may leave anytime during the walk since we are always near stations. You can get food/drink at a supermarket on the way or at the festivals.

☆Meeting Time/Place: 12:35 Tsukushino Station (Tokyu DenenToshi Line) ticket gate (From Shibuya, take the 11:52 Tokyo DenenToshi Line express and get off at Nagatsuda Station (12:27 arrival) and change to the local (leaving at 12:31), arriving in Tsukushino at 12:33).

☆Course:  Tsukushino Station –  Ondagawa tree-lined river and several festivals – Mt. Kashinoki Nature Park – Serigaya Park Cherry Trees – Tamagawagakuen area cherry tree walk/viewing party – Tamagawagakuen-mae Station 

Walking&Sightseeing Time: 3 hours walking time (7km) and plenty of free time under the trees
