SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

There will be a JAMBO Live House in Soshigaya (at Live House Ikeda, a 2 minute walk from the Odakyu Line’s Soshigaya Ookura Station) on Saturday, July 31. If you are interested in playing therein, please let Nori Funabashi (oofunafuna@yahoo.co.jp) know by June 30 (stating what kind of performance you’d like to do and how long). Candidates will be chosen by lottery and informed of the results on July 7.

BBQ NEWS

We are expecting a large group for the BBQ on April 29. It should be a wonderful time! For your information, we have only 2 grills and will choose the order of cooking by lottery, so it may take a while before you can cook. Therefore, it’s best to bring so ready to eat picnic food as well. We will stop by the supermarket near Nishi Urawa Station so you can buy your food and drink there. If have have a grill which you can bring, it would be very helpful. Also, small coolers are useful. I’ll send the Golden Week & May schedule shortly, but here’s the plan:

May 1 – Kamakura Flower Walk

May 2 – Tama Zoo Work Project

May 4 – Chichibu Flower Carpet Hike

1,000 yen of your admission fee will be donated to the African Wildlife Foundation, a group in Africa that works to protect the environment while, at the same time, promoting the development of the local people. So you can have an enjoyable evening and help a good cause at the same time.

David Howenstein and JAMBO International Center

Recently, on a late winter afternoon, I was finally able to catch up with David Howenstein for a sit-down at the Takadanobaba Starbucks. David, who comes from St. Louis and has been in Japan for 20 years, is the founder and director of JAMBO International Center located here in Tokyo. He started JAMBO (which means “Greetings!” in Swahili) in 1996 to “encourage people to reconnect with nature while helping others.” The original format was to aid Africa through sponsoring charitable activities, and to experience nature.
