(1) Environmental Project at Tama Zoo
(Cancelled in case of 70% or more chance of rain)

Meeting place and time: 9:30 am at the front main entrance of Tama Zoo’s station (Tama Dobutsukoen).

Cost: FREE

Train:If you are going from Shinjuku, take the 8:37 Keio Line Super-express from Shinjuku to Takahatafudo (arriving at 9:12) and change to the Keio Dobutsu Koen Line train, leaving Takahatafudo at 9:20 and arriving at Tama Dobutsu Koen Station at 9:24.

Work hour: 9:30 am – 3:00 pm
The main types of work are cutting down bamboo grass and cutting up/clearing out dead wood.

If you would like to participate, please inform David (at jambodave@green.email.ne.jp) by October 21 (Thursday) so that we can get volunteer insurance.

Things to bring: Long sleeved shirt and long pants (not shorts), work gloves, towel, and appropriate shoes (trekking shoes or hiking boots) are required.

Please bring whatever you want to eat for lunch, and drinks during the work project.

(2) Arakawa River Clean Up

Gather at Funabori Station: 13:00
Go to the river: 13:10
River Clean Up: 13:30-17:00
Relaxing riverside: 17:00-17:30
Return to station: 17:30

RIVER CLEAN UP
Gather at FUNABORI Station (Shinjuku Line) outside the only ticket gate at 13:00, and then go to the Arakawa River and pick up trash along the banks for about about 3 hours.

ADDITIONAL INFO:
If you come late, it will be about a 25 min. walk to our location about 200-300 meters or so from the Shinjuku Line Bridge (near the dirty angle). Call James’ (the organizer) cell phone 090-1847-5075 if there are any problems finding us.

RAIN:
In the event of light or medium rain this event will NOT be cancelled. Please bring rain gear and we will take shelter (under a bridge) until any downpours let up. In the event of heavy rain/strong winds (e.g., typhoon conditions) or lightning then the event will be cancelled (and usually moved to a different day).

Course: Nishi Agano Station – Ogi no Daira – Shirataki Waterfall – Fudou Waterfall – Big Waterfall – Nishi Agano Station (About 4 hours)

Please bring your lunch and drink and make sure to wear proper shoes for a hike.

Course: JR Torisawa Station – Mt. Ougi (1138M) – Mt. Okubo (1109M) – JR Torisawa Station
The top of Mt. Ougi is very spacious with a wonderful view of Mt. Fuji.

Hiking time: About 5 hours

We’ll focus on the U-shaped geography. Let’s explore the city’s hills and valleys.

Takanawa Gateway Station –  Tozenji Temple (the first British Legation) – Sengakuji Temple (Graves of Asano Naganori and 47 rōnin) – Gyoranzaka Slope – Yureizaka Slope – Kamazuka Park (the place of legend Takeshiba-dera Temple in “Sarashina Nikki (Sarashina Diary)”) – Takanawa Okido (The starting point used for Ino Tadataka’s survey) –  Sengakuji Station

☆Walking Time: About 1 hour (about 5km) plus a lot of time for sightseeing so the walk should
take about 2 hours.

☆The program is ¥1000.

Gather at Barakinakayama Station (Tozai Line) outside the only ticket gate at 13:00., and then go to the Edogawa River by car and pick up trash along the banks for about about 3 to 4 hours.

OPTIONAL MORNING SESSION
As I am often on the river in the morning doing some scouting and precleaning, people welcome to join me at that time, but please make specific arrangements with me by e-mail, arrival time, location, etc. Also, members can clean at any time and even any date. Just bring some clear bags and sort the trash collected, buranable, PET, cans, bottles, nonburanble, etc. and let me know where you leave the bags so that we can collect them.

INFO:
If you come late, it will be about a 25-min walk to our location on the opposite side of the river from the Clean Spa. Just walk to the river from the station and the head in the direction of Tokyo Bay until you see us along the water line. Also call my cell phone 090-1847-5075 if there are any problems finding us.

RAIN:
In the event of light or medium rain this event will NOT be cancelled as we will move to and from the river by car and we can clean up under cover the bay front bridges as a Plan B as well as adjacent areas using rain ware. Meet place and time: At the Odakyu Line’s Satsukidai Station’s ticket gate at 11:00 am

Course: Satsukidai Station – Gorikida Observatory Park – Prefectural Border Ridge Path – Katahira River – Kuriki Green Course – Tama New Town Observatory Point -Kurokawayatsu Park – Wakabadai Station

It’s an easy 4-5 hour course (about 12 km) with a lot of greenery.
