SOUTH TAKAO RIDGE Hike

(This will be a joint hike, co-sponsored by Friends of the Earth Japan and JAMBO)
MEETING TIME AND PLACE: 10:05 a.m. in front of the ticket gate of Takao-san-guchi Station of the Keio Line.

TRANSPORTATION: If you’re coming from Shinjuku, take the Keio Line departing from Keio Shinjuku Station at 9:11 a.m. and arriving at Takao-san-guchi Station at 10:05 (¥390).

WALKING TIME: About five hours

GRADE: Moderately easy

LEADER: Richard Evanoff

DESCRIPTION OF THE HIKE: A lovely late-spring hike through mixed forests, with no major climbs but lots of little ups and downs. We climb Mt. Nakazawa and then follow the South Takao Ridge (Minami Takao Sanryo), with views of Lake Tuskui along the way. We have lunch at the Nishiyama Pass and then a break at Lake Shiroyama. The trail ends at the Kompira Shrine, just a short walk from Takao Station (for both the JR Chuo Line and the Keio Line). During the hike, brief explanations of three sites that local citizens groups have been trying to protect will be given. After the hike everyone is welcome to join us at the Galway Irish Pub, a five-minute walk from JR Hachioji Station.

FURTHER DETAILS: No reservation system—just turn up at the meeting place. The hike will be canceled in the event of rain. Bring your lunch, drink, rain gear, health insurance card (in case of an accident), and proper hiking shoes. Participation fee: 1,000 yen donation to Friends of the Earth to support the work it is doing on environmental issues in Japan and worldwide. You should be reasonably fit. Although the leaders take every precaution, participation is at your own risk
